Lamento for "Don Quixote”
For solo trumpet and strings, also available for trumpet and piano reduction.

Commissioned by Michelle Hudson for her husband, Tim, on his fortieth birthday.

This 9 minute piece is a set of 12 variations over a descending ground bass for solo trumpet and string orchestra. Inspired by the Picasso drawing of “Don Quixote and Sancho Panzo”, the work is set in a quasi Spanish-Baroque style with the string setting at times lush, at other times reminiscent of the guitar, at still other evocative of a Baroque concerto grosso. The solo trumpet part is demanding: part bravura, part technically virtuosic and part soft, delicate. The orchestra string parts are not that difficult and would require minimum rehearsal time. The version for trumpet and piano reduction should be a welcome addition to the recital repertoire.

Premiere performance, October 20, 2007. Tim Hudson, trumpet, Chapel Hill Philharmonic (NC), Andrew McAfee conductor.

Lamento becomes available November, 2007.
